Lolita Blue & Gold Macaw's Care
Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to retire from performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. After the 1993 movie Free Willy sparked public outrage over the return of orca Keiko into the wild, activists believed that Lolita would have a similar fate. Unfortunately, she never got the chance to go back to sea.
Lolita's captors - the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They cause harm to her health by requiring her to perform for tourists. They over-exert her with high-speed circles and head-first diving, which exposes her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also keep her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller than her natural habitat.
In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita an aunt of theirs, vowed to work on a plan with a group of Lolita supporters, known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to move her eventually to open water. The plan included a facility in Washington's westcoast where she could live the remaining days and receive human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home, and would be surrounded by the ocean and not a concrete tank.
If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild, killers whales are social animals who bond with their family members until death. Lolita, who has lived in a solitary space at Seaquarium in a secluded area for over 40 years, is now being released into the wild. Miami Seaquarium, and in particular Lolita has been criticized over the quality of the food they provide to their killer whales. The 57-year-old orca was taken from Puget Sound in 1970, and even though the species is threatened in the wild, she is in an aquarium that some say is too small for her.
Lolita's Health
While her beauty is evident Lolita's health continues get worse. Her health has been a cause of concern for animal welfare groups who would like to see her released back into the wild. Lolita has been living at the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and was an attraction for tourists for a long time. She has been fighting persistent illnesses and an infection that has left her in a fragile condition.
The Miami Seaquarium is now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not disclosed information about Lolita's current condition. However, the non-profit organization Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. They have shown that she is ageing quickly and that her health is declining.
It is not clear what health issues are plaguing the orca, as her captor is not required to share the information. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies taken from Sea World. This shows that kidney diseases often play an important factor in the death of captive orcas.
Despite the health issues that continue to plague of Lolita many are hopeful that she may be closer than ever to a wild life. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has stated his commitment to transfer the whale out of her tank to her natural waters in the Pacific.
After years of public pressure from PETA and others and the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary at the sea and she will be able to swim deep in the water, perhaps even reunited with her orca mother. These plans came too late to save the beloved whale, which passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney issue.
