The Mindy catalina macaw that is blue and gold is an amazing bird. Its stunning visual appeal is well-known. Its sociable nature makes it a great companion for families. It also excels at interaction and is able to learn phrases and tricks quickly.

Our own blue and gold macaw, Pteri, can say hello with apple, water, and more. The birds are able to live for more than 50 years.

Lolita’s Personality

Macaws are wonderful companion birds. They are smart and affectionate. They are the perfect addition to families with a variety of members. They can become bored quickly and will find ways to entertain themselves when their owners aren't involved enough with them. Macaws that are not properly socialized can become aggressive, and can even bite. It is essential that boundaries are clearly established so that the macaw does not feel threatened.

In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are energetic birds who love to play, climb and play. They require 2 to 3 hours per day in their cages to get physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games, learning tricks, and listening to music. They love visiting playgrounds and parks as well as hiking, local eateries and bars. They are not just a great pet but also a wonderful companion for children.

Despite their adoring appearance they are loud and can be a distraction to those who live near. They can make high-pitched screech-calls and ear-piercing calls, which can be a nuisance in condominiums and apartments, or near young children who may be frightened by their noise.

Another intriguing characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic which means males and females are difficult to tell apart. This is why DNA testing is the only reliable method to determine sex. Once sex is established pairing the birds can be attempted and breeding can begin.

Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to master commands, phrases and tricks. This can be a long process and the pet's owner must be patient and realize that this is a tough task. The use of positive reinforcement can help speed up the process and help to correct any issues with behavior.

Lolita's care

For years, activists have been pleading for the release of Lolita from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 blockbuster film Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's return to the wild, marine biologists hoped that Lolita could suffer a similar fate. Sadly, she did not get the chance to return to the sea.

Lolita's captors, also known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her at risk. They cause harm to her health by requiring her to perform for tourists. They overexert her with high-speed circle and head-first diving, expose her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. Additionally, they place her in a tiny tank that is just one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.

In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita an aunt of theirs, promised to work on an arrangement with a group of Lolita supporters, known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe to transport her eventually to open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast where she could live the rest of her days, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and be is surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are social animals that are close to their family members until death. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for 40 years. Many activists across the country, including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have urged her to retire from Seaquarium's stage and eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet

A balanced diet is vital for the health of a blue and gold macaw. These beautiful birds require high-quality food, as well as plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. In captivity, a well-fed severe macaw can expect to live up to 60 years. This magnificent bird also requires plenty of space to fly and exercise.

A blue and gold macaw can be a charming friend who is also very intelligent. They are known to quickly learn new words and tricks, and they are extremely adaptable. This bird is an excellent choice for people who are just starting their journey into avian companionship.

The bird is also extremely social and easily bonds with her family members. Blue and gold macaws are known for their loud screams, including "flock call" as a part of their natural behavior. They may even be able to chew and squabble, especially when they are annoyed or bored. This kind of behavior is expected of potential pet owners.

The Miami Seaquarium has released a series of information about Lolita's health and status, but questions remain. Akromas and others who have trained or overseen Lolita's health in the past are concerned about her diet. The most recent update on the Friends of Lolita website states that she eats 115 pounds of salmon, capelin, herring, and squid per day.

The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they offer their killer whales, especially Lolita. The 57-year-old orca was taken from Puget Sound in 1970, and even though the species is threatened in the wild, she is in an aquarium that many consider too small for her.

Lolita's Health

Lolita is beautiful, but her health is declining. Animal welfare groups have expressed concern about her and would like to see her released back into nature. Lolita who has been living at the Miami Seaquarium in Miami since 1970, has been a tourist attraction for a long time. She has battled chronic illnesses and a crippling disease that has left her in a fragile state.

The Miami Seaquarium is now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not shared information on Lolita's current condition. Friends of Toki, a non-profit organization, has posted monthly updates on her health and well being on their website. These updates indicate that Toki is ageing rapidly and that her health is declining.

It is not known what health issues are plaguing the orca, since her captor is not obliged to disclose this information. However, a repository of necropsies from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is often a factor in the death of orcas kept in captivity.

Despite the ongoing health issues, many are hopeful that Lolita could be closer to living in the wild than ever before. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has pledged to relocate the whale out of her tank into her home waters in the Pacific.

After years of public pressure from PETA and others and the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary on the ocean where she can take a deep dive in the ocean and possibly even be reconnect with her orca mother. Unfortunately, these plans came too late for the whale that was so beloved, who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a renal problem.
